As we fast approach the fantasy hockey playoffs and near the end of the NHL regular season there are reliable veterans and young rising talents alike to be had on the waiver wire. Below is a list of 5 candidates that may be available in your league to help you make a run to a championship!
Y= % available in Yahoo leagues, E= % available in ESPN leagues
- Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Edmonton Oilers C Y-40% E-23%
Back after a seven game absence, Nugent-Hopkins is ramping up his minutes and will help an Oilers team that is again well outside the playoff chase. He should play decent minutes as he could be a candidate that draws interest from other teams in the off-season as part of a possible trade. On the season Hopkins has 10g, 22a, -9.
- Brian Elliot, St. Louis Blues G T-77% E-69%
Elliot is slated to start today. He missed the last 10 games but was playing well before the injury. It might be good timing since Jake Allen has given up at least 4 goals in the last three games. Before the injury, Elliot racked up 17 wins while posting a 2.14gaa and .929SV%
- Marion Hossa, Chicago Blackhawks RW Y-32% E-8%
Hossa is back after a nine game absence and could help the team make their playoff push. Although his numbers are not overwhelming this year, I think he is a nice fit skating on a line with Artemi Panarin and Artem Anisimov. Hossa is sitting at 11g, 18a and + 9
- Mikael Backlund, Calgary Flames C Y-91% E-73%
This is simply a case of picking up a player who is picking up points at a nice rate. 4g, 5a and + 2 in the last 10 contests. Backlund in one point shy of reaching 40 on the season and currently sits at 15g, 24a and + 10 on the season.
- Zach Bogosian, Buffalo Sabers D Y-90% E-46%
Zach is having a slow season by most standards. Seeing TOI in the mid 20’s lately, he has produced some numbers worth noting. In the last 11 games he has 3g, 5a, and is + 7 and has posted 37 shots in those 10 games with 1 PP point. If you are in need of some defensive help he might not light it up every night but he won’t kill your +/-.
